Elongate, compressed; head long, pointed, top profile straight; eye large; mouth large, horizontal, at front, lower jaw projects; teeth large, conical, large fangs at front top jaw; dorsal long base, XX-XXI, 16-19, with deep notch between 2 parts, 2 finlets after; anal 2 free spines then 15-19 rays, then 2 finlets; pelvics tiny, under pectorals; tail forked; 1 straight lateral line along length of body.
Blackish brown; dorsal and anal clear; inside mouth and gill chamber black.
Size: 30 cm.
Habitat: oceanic pelagic.
Depth: 0-820 m.
Circumtropical; southern Baja and the southern Gulf of California to Peru, all the offshore islands.
